Are you a night-time nibbler?

Are you a night-time nibbler?

You eat well all day. Balanced meals. Plenty of protein. Good intentions.

Then 8pm arrives… and suddenly you’re in the kitchen looking for “something sweet” or “just a little something”.

So what’s really going on?

It’s rarely about willpower.

Here are the most common reasons:

  1. Nervous system fatigue
If you’ve been in go-mode all day — coaching, working, caring, decision-making — your nervous system is tired. Evening eating can be a way of self-soothing. Food becomes a fast route to safety and comfort.
  2. Brain energy depletion
Your brain runs primarily on glucose. If meals have been too light, too low in carbs, or you’ve under-fuelled, your brain will drive you towards quick energy at night. That “craving” is often a biological correction.
  3. Cortisol patterns
High stress during the day can suppress appetite. When cortisol drops in the evening, hunger rebounds — sometimes strongly.
  4. Habit loops
If every evening for years has meant sofa + snack, your brain links relaxation with food. That pathway becomes automatic.
  5. Under-eating earlier
Many high-performing women unintentionally under-eat. By evening, the body is simply catching up.

So is it nervous system or lack of brain energy?

Often it’s both.

What helps:

• Ensure lunch includes adequate protein and complex carbs
• Don’t skip carbs entirely
• Eat a proper evening meal
• Build a wind-down routine that isn’t food-based
• Check whether you’re actually tired, not hungry

And sometimes… a planned, balanced evening snack is absolutely fine. Removing guilt often reduces the urge to overdo it.

Hope that helps and I hope to see you in class either in person or online soon.
