Welcome to my weekly Women’s Wellness Newsletter, which I send out every Saturday. This space is for women of all ages who want to live well, feel vibrant, and stay strong.
Each week, I’ll share simple, practical tips to help you manage your wellness and introduce habits you can apply immediately to feel better, energised, and empowered.
This week, I’ve been diving deep into the world of sunscreen. My son has fair skin, and many sunscreens cause him to itch and feel uncomfortable, so I’ve been researching clean sunscreen ingredients and asking for recommendations on my page.
Whether a sunscreen contains “clean ingredients” really depends on its formulation — and the term clean isn’t strictly regulated, so definitions can vary between brands and certifying bodies.
I’ve also been following @yourmategingerkate on Instagram and looking at her homemade sunscreen recipe. I may give it a try this week — have you made it? Let me know………
A Quick Breakdown on Clean Sunscreens
Ingredients Often Considered “Clean”
Mineral (Physical) Filters:
- Zinc Oxide
- Titanium Dioxide
These are generally considered reef-safe, non-irritating, and less likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream. They sit on the skin’s surface and reflect UV rays.
Other Clean-Friendly Features:
- Fragrance-free
- Paraben-free
- Silicone-free
- No oxybenzone or octinoxate (often avoided due to reef and hormone concerns)
- Packaged in recyclable or sustainable materials
Ingredients Commonly Avoided
- Oxybenzone and Octinoxate (linked to hormone disruption)
- Homosalate, Octocrylene, Avobenzone (concerns about absorption and breakdown)
- Synthetic fragrances
- Parabens (preservatives with potential hormonal impact)
How to Choose a Clean Sunscreen
Look for products labelled:
- Mineral or Physical Sunscreen
- EWG Verified (Environmental Working Group)
- Certified Organic or Natural (COSMOS, ECOCERT etc.)
