Try This Cortisol Cocktail Recipe – Why It’s Great for You
By Rachel Holmes
If you’re working on improving your energy, managing stress, supporting your hormone health or navigating perimenopause and menopause, you may have heard the term “cortisol cocktail” being mentioned in wellness circles.
So what is it, why is it helpful, and how do you make one? Let’s break it down.
What is a Cortisol Cocktail?
A cortisol cocktail is a simple, natural drink made with a blend of minerals and vitamins that support your body’s stress response, energy production, and adrenal function – especially first thing in the morning.
Cortisol is your body’s main stress hormone. It plays a vital role in energy, mood, immune function and blood sugar regulation. Your cortisol levels naturally rise in the morning to help wake you up, but if you’re constantly stressed, not sleeping well, or dealing with hormonal changes, your cortisol rhythm can become disrupted.
That’s where a cortisol cocktail can help. It’s not a magic cure, but it’s a small, supportive step to nourish your body first thing and set you up for a more balanced day.
Benefits of a Cortisol Cocktail
- Supports healthy cortisol production in the morning
- Rehydrates the body after sleep
- Helps regulate blood sugar and reduce morning fatigue
- May reduce feelings of anxiety and overwhelm
- Supports the adrenal glands and nervous system
- A natural way to boost energy without caffeine

This version is easy to make and uses ingredients you may already have at home. Have it on an empty stomach shortly after waking, ideally before your morning coffee or breakfast.
Ingredients:
- 200–250ml filtered water or coconut water
- Juice of half a fresh lemon or orange (for vitamin C)
- A pinch of pink Himalayan salt or sea salt (for trace minerals)
- 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar (a good source of potassium)
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon of magnesium powder (if taking supplements), or a magnesium glycinate capsule alongside
Method:
- Mix all ingredients together in a glass.
- Stir well until dissolved.
- Sip slowly in the morning, ideally within 30–60 minutes of waking.
When to Have It
Aim to drink your cortisol cocktail first thing in the morning, before breakfast. It’s especially useful on busy days, during high-stress periods, or if you’re experiencing adrenal fatigue symptoms such as:
- Low energy in the morning
- Salt or sugar cravings
- Poor sleep or early waking
- Feeling wired but tired
A Simple Habit for Better Energy
The cortisol cocktail isn’t a replacement for a healthy lifestyle, good sleep, and stress management – but it’s a brilliant addition to your routine if you’re looking to support your adrenals and nervous system.
Give it a try for a week and see how your energy, clarity, and mood respond.
Let me know if you add it into your routine – I’d love to hear how it works for you.
